Writing Workshop / Open Mic Night

Celebrate creativity with a Writing Workshop and Open Mic Reading in the Kearny Public Library on Friday, February 24.  We are honored to present local author and historian Barbara Krasner as facilitator of our workshop series.  She will be on hand to offer writing prompts and exercises.  Afterwards, we will have an open mic program with five-minute segments that participants can fill with poetry, music, dramatic monologues, etc.  Share your own work or the work of artists you love.  We ask that all open mic presenters please refrain from using bad language.  The workshop will kick off at 6 PM, with the open mic portion following at 7 PM.

Among her many publications, Barbara Krasner has written several books about Kearny and its history including Images of America: Kearny, New Jersey, Images of America: Kearny’s Immigrant Heritage and The Kearny Public Library and Its Town.  Her newest publication, Legendary Locals, a compilation of more than 100 mini-biographies of the people who helped shape the town of Kearny, was published in 2015.  Her poetry has been published in several well-known literary magazines, including Nimrod, Paterson Literary Review, Lips and the Copperfield Review.

This program is free and open to all interested. It will take place in the Main Library, located at 318 Kearny Ave. in Kearny, NJ.

Book Discussion Group

The Kearny Public Library welcomes new members to join our monthly Book Discussion Group, which normally meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM on the lower level of the Main Library, located at 318 Kearny Ave.

The KPL Book Club plans on continuing the success it has been building over the last few years with moderator Dorothy Meissner and a core of dynamic, dedicated members. Please note that the group will not be meeting in July, August or December.

While they are always open to new members, they are also actively seeking local authors who might be interested in doing book talks. If you are an interested local author, please contact the library.

The next meeting of the Book Discussion Group will be held on Wednesday, March 8 to discuss Vinegar Hill , award-winning author A. Manette Mansay's historical family saga set in 1972 Wisconsin. If anyone is interested in joining in, copies of each book are available at the Main Library, while supplies last. Just ask at the front desk.
